Publication Case Study
Safe Routes to School Resource Guide
Client: Safe Routes to School National Partnership
Audience: State and local education professionals and policymakers
Task: Bogli Consulting was chosen to develop a resource guide to help Safe Routes to School (SRTS) programs and active transportation advocates communicate the value of SRTS to education professionals and policymakers and address the needs and concerns of this audience. Bogli Consulting brought together a team of writers, researchers and active transporation specialists to develop the resource guide.
Result/Product: The guide, Getting Students Active through Safe Routes to School: Policies and Action Steps for Education Policymakers and Professionals, provides a detailed examination of the most up-to-date and relevant research linking physical activity and academic achievement. It also includes policies and action steps that can be implemented at the state, school district and individual school level in several key areas specific to the education sector. Stories from states and communities across the nation provide real-life examples of how SRTS programs and policies can be adopted and implemented.
State and National Content Standards Case Studies
National Health Education Standards Panel (NHES)
Client: American Cancer Society
Audience: Health educators/teachers, school staff, institutions of higher education, Local and state education agencies, national health organizations, curriculum/textbook publishers, K-12 and higher education students, and policymakers
Task: Jess Bogli was selected to be on the 2005 NHES Panel to review, revise and develop new material for the health education standards. Through this 18-month process, Jess increased her experience working with standards and assessment in health education. This has enabled her to help districts around Oregon in their process to craft curriculum that aligns with standards and benchmarks and that can be properly implemented and assessed.
Result/Product: Revised National Health Education Standards and opportunities to train on NHES for the American Cancer Society. Read more on our presentations page.
National Health Education Standards
Oregon Health Education Content Standards
Client: Oregon Department of Education
Audience: Health educators and school health partners
Challenge/Task: Bring together a content panel of educators and develop K-12 health education content standards to be approved by the Oregon State Board of Education
Result/Product: State Board of Education approved K-12 Oregon Health Education Content Standards
Classroom Health Curriculum Case Study
Spotlight on Smokeless (SOS)
Client: ETR Associates
Audience: Eighth and Ninth grade students
Task: Write a health education curriculum aligned to National Standards that addresses the knowledge and skills students need to know and be able to demonstrate to refuse smokeless tobacco or stop using tobacco products.
Result/Product: A curriculum program with five core sessions and two booster sessions.
After-School Curriculum Program Case Studies
EmpowerMe4Life
Client: Alliance for a Healthier Generation
Audience: Eight to Twelve year old youth in after-school programs such as YMCA, Boys and Girls Club and Campfire USA
Task: Develop a program with eight lessons focused on obesity prevention that would be delivered in and after-school setting. Program specifically addressed knowledge and skill development around nutrition, physical activity and reduction of screen time. Help structure the field test and collection of feedback to make revisions.
Result/Product: Eight lesson after-school curriculum program including facilitator’s guide.
School Garden Coordinator Certification
Client: Growing Gardens
Audience: Adults interested in becoming school garden coordinators
Task: Work with a team to develop a thirty hour training to teach participants the skills and knowledge needed to be an after-school garden coordinator.
Result/Product: Pilot training offered summer of 2009 to twelve participants.
